Three Generations Painting Together

I launched Paper Scissors Art in February 2020 with great excitement and anticipation, but then the global pandemic hit in March and the world shut down. For the first few weeks, I aimed high and tried to create content and projects for you to try out, but sadly my role as “teacher” during “distance learning” took precedence. When that was over, we were optimistic about a COVID free summer, which has not happened. If anything, it got worse. Conditioned to our quarantine lifestyle, we have gotten used to lots of time at home together, but it’s also meant I have had to really struggle to figure out how I create art and run a business while the whole family is at home wanting to be fed, watered, and entertained.

For most of June, I wallowed in my disappointment with the world. I think we have all been doing this to a certain extent, but come July, I said to myself, no more. Look at your feet, put one foot in front of the other.

A wonderful family approached me about a commission pre-COVID. We finally connected and organized a family painting party on a hot Saturday afternoon, outside of course, following all the suggested CDC protocol. Believe me, a mask in 100 degree weather was quite unpleasant, but it was worth it to hear the family stories and jokes while three generations painted together. A grandmother never knew she was such a good painter until that day. A son proudly brought out his own brushes and ideas to paint. A granddaughter and grandmother sweetly copied each other. A mother nagged her husband about using too many neon colors. A quiet grandfather painted meticulously as directed. Yacht rock played on the outdoor speakers. I was truly honored to be there and part of this special family moment. The final product will be a family heirloom they are already fighting over.

If you are local to DFW, consider this type of family activity for a commission. I believe it makes the art even more precious and special, for the buyer, but for me as the artist.

At least for now, before another tragic world event surprises us all, I have found my “mojo.” I have several commissions underway that I cannot wait to share with you. I’m also going to update the shop with some new ideas. I’ll be featuring original, individual works I make, in addition to concepts for commissions.
